Can Summer Sun Ruin Your Sight?

With temperatures rising, there’s no doubt that summer is here.  And while you probably know how important it is to shield your skin from harmful UV rays, it’s also just as important to protect your eyes. Read on to learn how UV rays can impact your vision and discover tips to keep your eyes healthy and happy all summer long.

Your eyes can get sunburned

There are three types of UV rays: UVA, UVB, and UVC, but only UVA and UVB rays can be found in sunlight. Over time, exposure to these UV rays can damage your skin and eyes.  According to Prevent Blindness, short-term exposure to high UVB rays can cause a corneal sunburn, better known as photokeratitis. While the sunburn won’t last, it can make eyes dry and itchy and even lead to temporary vision loss.

Sunglasses can help

To help protect your eyes, you want to look for sunglasses with 100% UVA and UVB protection. Also consider larger frames to prevent rays from entering your eyes from the sides or tops of your glasses. Wrap around frames can also provide enhanced protection. If you love spending time on the lake or beach, polarized lenses might be a good option as they help block the glare from light reflecting off of the water. Your eye doctor can help pick the best frames and lenses for your needs.

Limit exposure

Summer often means more sunlight, and more chances for UV ray exposure. While you can’t avoid the sun completely, there are some steps you can take to limit your risk. UV rays are the strongest from     10 a.m. to 4 p.m., so consider doing outdoor activities outside of those hours. Avoid using tanning beds or sun lamps as they can omit UVA/UVB rays as well. When outside, make sure to wear sunscreen and a wide brim hat in addition to your sunglasses.
